How to Make an Appointment with Dr. Firnberg —
Featuring our new on-line scheduling system,
Schedulicity.Com.
1. New Patients:
a. If you are having a medical or psychiatric emergency or feel unstable in any major sense, rather than waiting the time needed to see an out-patient psychiatrist such as Dr. Firnberg, you should just go to the nearest emergency room immediately. If you cannot get to an emergency room in a safe manner, then just dial 911 and emergency personnel will be sent to your location to take you to the hospital. Later, once you are more stable, you can resume the following steps for setting up an out-patient appointment with Dr. Firnberg.
a. However, if you feel stable on a medical or psychiatric level, then print the new patient documents from the icon near the bottom of this column and fill them out. Be sure to read the contract closely and understand the rules of treatment before you sign. Bring these documents with you to your initial exam.
b. Keep this window open to this page of my website. Then go to your web browser desktop icon and double-left-click on it, in order to open an entirely new window to the internet. With this new window to the net, go to www.Schedulicity.Com . You can then use these two windows in order to refer back and forth, reading the instructions on my website while setting up your account on Schedulicity.
To begin use of Schedulicity, go to their home page, then go to the upper left side of the home page where it says, “Book an appointment in seconds.” Click there on the icon, “Details.” I suggest that you watch the demo first (found in lower left side of this second page). Remember to turn on the volume before watching the demo.
To set up your password-protected account, begin by locating the two horizontal dialog boxes on this same page (page two) — enter the location for our clinic (“Anaheim Hills”) in the one on the left, and enter the establishment (“Thomas Firnberg, M.D.”) in the one on the right. The next page will display my name in blue — click on my name displayed in blue. The next page lists the different kinds of office appointments we use — choose the “New Patient Initial Psychiatric Exam, 90-min.” Next, select a day and time which work for your schedule.
On the next page, you fill in your street or mailing address, then click on “BOOK IT.” Next, click on the sentence, “SIGN UP Now — It’s Free!,” and this will take you to the next page, where you enter your e-mail address, your mobile phone number, and you choose a confidential password. Then, make a note of the date of your appointment, and remember to write down the password you have used, just for future reference. Remember that our 24-hour cancellation policy remains in effect — if you attempt to cancel an appointment less than 24 hours before your appointment, Schedulicity will not let you do so, and you yourself will be charged for the missed appointment, unless you have had some kind of real emergency.
c. Bring your insurance card with you to your appointment, if you plan for us to bill your insurance — we will make a photocopy of your card and use this information to bill your insurance company. Be sure to bring cash for your co-payment — your card should indicate the amount. Remember that some plans have different copayments for primary care than for specialists — and psychiatrists are classed as specialists.
If you will be paying on a cash basis, bring $200.– in cash to your first appointment. Once you arrive, a lower price may be negotiated in cases of financial distress.
c. Bring the initial patient documents which you have filled out, including the contract, with you on the day of your appointment. Also, bring any recent lab reports from any tests which may have been done by other doctors, and any prior psychiatric records. These are all helpful to the doctor.
d. If possible, have a complete annual physical exam done by your primary care provider (PCP) prior to your initial psychiatric exam, if you have not had a physical exam in the past year. Bring the report from this exam with you to your initial psychiatric exam, along with any test results from that physical exam.
e. I recommend that all new patients read the short essay “Important Tips for Optimizing Your Psychiatric Care,” found under the EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS section of this website. Observing these simple pointers will save you much time, exasperation, and trouble in your psychiatric care.
