especially in recent years, because of the improvements in safety, effectiveness, and tolerability which have been achieved.

Although the maximal effectiveness of psychopharmacotherapy occurs when combined with psychotherapy (counseling), some patients prefer pharmacotherapy (medications) alone.  The reasons for this are various, but usually have to do with financial and time constraints.

Also, some psychiatric disorders (such as ADHD, bipolar mood disorder, and psychotic disorders)  simply cannot be controlled with psychotherapy alone, and medications must be used for treatment.  Most of these disorders do however benefit from the addition of psychotherapy to the medication regimen.
